A forgotten art worth reviving
Over at Love and Fidelity Network, they posted this article on the differences between courtship and dating, between wooing and pursuing. Now what girl in her right mind wouldn't want to be wooed? I always say I don't want to be "dated," I want to be courted. Maybe not necessarily in a way as formally as done in the past, but with the basic framework and mindset of courtship, yes.
And that makes all the difference.
Please read! I'd personally like to hear your thoughts and reactions to it. :)

Hmmmm ...
ReplyDeleteMy personal reactions ...
For myself personally - blearg. Definitely not me.
For you, however - perfect. :) Miss Romantic/Starry Eyes. Haha.
I personally think both men and women should be free in society to own their interests and express them to each other. And that both parties should be free to make moves, pursue, be pursued. Every couple is different and it will work out differently, though.
Yet there is something beautiful in these ideas you're linking to. It seems to me they owe a lot to the idea of courtly love, and the woman as a beautiful, sacred image of God. There are some really beautiful things about the courtly love tradition - and, I think, some weak spots as it can be overly idealistic, and often failed in real history to give women actual freedom. Or it could encourage adultery. (The real women wooed in the age of courtly love were only high-born women and rarely had much choice in who they married. Or their lovers were not their husbands.)
I also think that every culture is different in its approach to finding a mate, and has its own strengths and weaknesses. Probably the best course is to respect one's particular cultural norms, without letting them trap one.
On to the fun part:
My ideal would be to be a happy, fulfilled, adventurous woman - and very naturally, while living my life, just happen across someone whose adventure happened to overlap mine. It seems very storylike to me.
Yours?
Love you, Lady L. Wait until the perfect, imperfect, beautiful, growing, learning, human knight comes along. :) <3
Courtship is what I want for my children, unless they have a vocation to Religious Life. (Just one priest, is that too much to ask?) I don't think it's unrealistic to find, you simply have to find someone who loves you that much.
